A Trap for Miss Purrdy

That evening, after supper, the cats adjourned to their rooms. They had strict instructions from Howard to bolt their doors.

The kitten, who was staying in Miss Purrdy’s room, slipped down to the pantry for a dish of cream. Miss Purrdy waited patiently for her in her room, the door bolted. Mitzy was to miaow three times before Miss Purrdy opened the door.

Presently, Miss Purrdy thought she heard the kitten’s rather whiny voice, but, how strange. Surely it came from the garden.

Miss Purrdy sprang lightly onto her windowsill and stared out. She had a shock. The evil figure of the Phantom Cat was prowling in the garden; and then, Mitzy’s dear little voice came from the shrubbery. Mitzy would surely fall prey to the Phantom Cat.

Was there time to do anything? She must try. Miss Purrdy, quite regardless of her own safely, raced down to the garden, calling out: “Mitzy. For goodness sake, don’t come out of the shrubbery! Stay hidden. The Phantom Cat is at hand.”

And then, the awful paw on her neck. The menacing voice of the Phantom Cat, which proclaimed, in tones of grim satisfaction:

“It’s you I wanted. You walked into the trap, didn’t you. But then, you always were a fool.”

And Miss Purrdy knew that she was the third victim of the Phantom Cat.

Back in the house, Mitzy demolished three bowls of cream before she emerged from the pantry, her whiskers dripping, a contented expression on the dainty, tilted face.

She felt uneasy as she padded along the meandering corridors, half-expecting the Phantom Cat to jump out from every corner. Fortunately, the house was well-lit: an instruction of Howard’s. She reached Miss Purrdy’s room, and noted that the door was open - strange. And Miss Purrdy was not in her room.

“The Phantom Cat has got Purrdy. He’s got Purrdy!” Stricken with sharp pangs of grief, the kitten raised the alarm. Soon, all the cats were out of their rooms, and Howard tried to quieten the frantic kitten. The house was duly searched. It was not until much later that the sinister note was found in Miss Purrdy’s room, in the sinister capitals of the Phantom Cat. Sandy found it, under a vase.

“SHE’S GONE. YOUR PRECIOUS MISS PURRDY HAS GONE OFF ON A LITTLE HOLIDAY. TRY NOT TO WORRY TOO MUCH. SORRY I COULDN’T SHOW MYSELF IN MY SKIN BEFORE I CAPTURED HER. JUST WASN’T POSSIBLE, IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES. I MUST BE LOSING MY TOUCH. I’LL TRY TO DO BETTER NEXT TIME.

YOURS EVER,

THE PHANTOM CAT”

Howard read the note, a pit of dismay deep in his stomach. The note was cheeky; it was remorseless; it was the note of someone who intended to see things through to the bitter end.

The cats adjourned to the library for a discussion, Howard holding the note as if it was poison. Mitzy was tearful. Sia held her head high, as though the business in hand did not concern her. Fritz’s gentle face was clouded, and Asquith’s brown face was furrowed in concentration.
